Swings to both sides: the quadratic formula and the discriminant.

Quadratic Formula

The quadratic formula and the discriminant. In MathBound, the free Algebra I adventure game, Plus-Minus Pendulum asks these problems, and the only way past is to solve them.

Part of Solving Quadratic Equations: chapter 10 of the standard course.

10 questions, no sign-up, nothing saved. Climbs from the basics to harder questions.

What you will practice

  • Identify Coefficients. Identify the coefficients a,b,and c in a quadratic equation written in standard form (ax^2 + bx + c = 0).
  • Solve with Formula. Solve a quadratic equation using the formula where the discriminant is a perfect square yielding rational solutions.
  • Standard Form First. Rearrange an equation into standard form before identifying coefficients and applying the formula.
  • Use the Discriminant. Calculate the discriminant (b^2 - 4ac) to determine if the equation has two, one,or zero real solutions.
