Short description

MathBound is a free Algebra I adventure game for the browser, now in alpha: students explore sky islands and win battles by solving real Algebra I problems, chapter by chapter with their own textbook.

Long description

MathBound: Algebra I is an adventure game in which every battle is won with algebra. Students crew an airship across a chain of sky islands to win back a stolen fleet of beacons from sky pirates and runaway clockwork. Each foe asks one kind of problem, from one-step equations to quadratics and data, and a right answer strikes; a miss shows the worked steps before the battle goes on.

The game follows the class’s own textbook. 18 Algebra 1 textbooks and 2 Integrated Math 1 courses are mapped lesson by lesson, plus a standard course, so each chapter becomes an island and each lesson a landing that asks that lesson’s problems, with the book’s own chapter and lesson numbers. There are 128 kinds of problem in all, and every question is generated fresh by the game’s own engine.

Teachers get a portal to make classes, set assignments with due dates, and see each student’s progress skill by skill. MathBound runs in any modern web browser, Chromebooks included, with nothing to install, no ads and nothing sold. MathBound is an alpha build. Students play free, with no sign-up; teachers and schools use it free during the alpha, and schools will later contract per student.

MathBound is made by Germ Studios LLC in Richmond, Virginia. Algebra I is the first course; Pre-Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, Statistics and Precalculus are planned, each its own game with its own world.
